on a sugar high

belgium – brussels & bruges

our very first stop was, of course, dinner! in the city with the highest number of Michelin star restaurants per capita, it’s hard to resist the temptation of good food. Chez Oki does a rather good mix of Japanese and French fuision food and the price of 40 euros for a three course dinner with wine is, in my opinion, pretty reasonable for a restaurant listed in the Michelin guide.

dinner started with a complimentary starter from the chef of duck and potato, and the set consisted of pan seared foie gras on sushi (this was the best), followed by duck as the main course, and finished off with a lemon, cheese and white chocolate mousse.

we took a day trip down to the little city of bruges, a quaint little place with waterways and cobblestoned paths. i’d have loved it more if it wasn’t raining, but even with the horrid weather, the place was charming.

(i nearly got run over by a horse taking this photo above!)

back in brussels, we went to look at that statue of the boy taking a piss. in all honesty, the manneken pis is nothing to shout about. however, the waffles stand right next to it sells the best waffles ever. at 2-4 euros per waffle, it’s rather pricey, but trust me – it’s worth it.

and i saw this little fella just sitting next to his owner’s cart. one little cute, scruffy looking dog.

on our second last day, we had lunch at Breneau. the food was pretty good, but for a two-star Michelin restaurant, i expected the standard to be a twitch higher. we did have a good dining experience though.

menu

starter cross-section
pata negra meat dessert
starter from the chef consisted of foie gras creme brûlée, tuna sashimi pieces on white wine jelly, and veal. the set lunch’s starter was foie gras terrine with caramelised apple slices, followed by pata negra for the main, and risotto in white chocolate and strawberry sauce for dessert.
